Kyle Edmund has recorded a straight-sets win over Jiri Vesely in the first round of the Shanghai Masters.
The British number three is looking for a strong end to the season with a significant number of ranking points to defend in the next month, and the Beverley-based hitter took the next step to returning to the world's top 50 with a 6-3 6-2 triumph over Vesely.
Both players registered a break of serve during the opening stages of the match but from 3-2 onwards, it was largely one-way traffic in Edmund's favour.
Vesely won more points on the Edmund serve throughout the match, but Edmund struck four times on the Czech player's delivery to run out the victor in just over an hour.
Edmund will now face world number five Marin Cilic in a match which will be staged on the main show court at the Masters Series event on Tuesday.
