World number two Simona Halep came from a set down to progress to the second round at the US Open, beating Danielle Rose Collins 6-7(2) 6-1 6-2 this evening.
The American wildcard served strongly in the opening set to take the Romanian to a tie-break on her Grand Slam debut, while Halep struggled to find her rhythm early on.
Halep continued to make errors in the tie-break, allowing the 20-year-old to wrap up the breaker 7-2.
The French Open finalist responded in the second while her opponent was unable to match the levels she had set in the opener, taking just over half an hour to get the match back on level terms.
Collins's problems continued in the decider as her serves failed to test her higher-ranked opponent, allowing Halep to get an early break before cruising to another comfortable set to seal the match.
Halep will face Slovakia's Jana Cepelova in round two later this week.
