Former world number one Boris Becker believes that winning gold at the 2012 Olympic Games was the key to Andy Murray clinching Wimbledon on Sunday.

The 26-year-old became the first British man to be crowned champion at SW19 since Fred Perry 77 years ago after a straight-sets victory over Novak Djokovic.

"He was courageous and extremely bold, not letting the pressure unsettle him," Becker told The Telegraph. "It takes a special person to win a Wimbledon title, and Andy Murray is undoubtedly special. Andy got closer every year through his hard work and dedication. As he said, his main virtue has been his perseverance.

"Yet it was with that Olympic gold medal in London last summer that he discovered the self‑belief that he could win a major title. It shows in a moment of crisis, where now he plays tennis on instinct. He knows that if he can do it once, he can do it again."

Becker won Wimbledon three times during his playing career.
