Gael Monfils has defeated Pablo Carreno Busta in straight sets to seal his place in the second round of Wimbledon.
The first set proved to be a tight encounter as the Spaniard matched the 28-year-old stroke for stroke, but Monfils managed to break through and earn a break of serve to take it 6-4.
Both players cancelled each other out in the second set as they held serve aided by their consistency on their groundstrokes, but once again the Frenchman seized the initiative to win the only break point available and secure the set 6-4.
Monfils relied on his serve in the final set as he fired 10 aces to keep Carreno Busta at bay, and he was also able to earn the break that clinched a 7-5 win and a place in the second round of the tournament.
The 28-year-old will face either Adrian Mannarino or Michael Berrer in the next round.
