South Africa reach 262-5 on day one

Alviro Petersen scores a century on day one of the second Test to give South Africa the edge over England in Headingley.

A century from Alviro Petersen means that South Africa have reached stumps on 262-5 on the first day of the second Test against England at Headingley.

After leaving Graeme Swann out of the side, England had to rely on their four-man pace attack but Andrew Strauss was left frustrated in the morning as a dropped catch from Alastair Cook in the slips and a dead ball ruling by the umpire - when Steven Finn thought he had dismissed Graeme Smith - resulted in both the openers reaching lunch unbeaten.

However, England fought back well in the second session with Smith (52) being sent packing by Anderson and Hashim Amla (9) being run out after a mix-up between the Oval treble centurion and Petersen.

After Jacques Kallis's (19) dismissal, AB de Villiers (47) looked in good form as he joined Petersen (124*) at the crease but he couldn't keep his wicket intact until stumps, with Stuart Broad finding a way through the batsman's defence.

Finn was able to remove nightwatchman Dale Steyn (0) before the close of play with the contest delicately poised ahead of day two.
