Ben Stokes's late wicket gives England momentum as Bangladesh end day two of the first Test on 221-5, trailing by 72 runs.

England have swung the momentum in their favour after Ben Stokes claimed a late wicket on day two of the first Test against Bangladesh in Chittagong.

The 25-year-old dismissed Mushfiqur Rahim for 48 before stumps, but the hosts remain in a relatively commanding position on 221-5, with a 72-run deficit.

England began the day on 258-7, but the wickets tumbled fast as Chris Woakes (36), Adil Rashid (26) and Stuart Broad (13) all fell in the morning session.

Bangladesh had an achievable target of 293 runs to surpass, but they suffered an early wobble when Moeen Ali struck twice in four balls to take out Imrul Kayes for 21 and Mominul Haque for a duck.

Despite the quick wickets, England failed to latch on to their momentum as the partnership between Tamim Iqbal and Mahmudullah produced 98 runs before the latter was sent packing by Rashid.

The tourists struggled to frustrate Bangladesh's attack, but they were given a lift when Gareth Batty nabbed his first Test wicket in 11 years by forcing Tamim to edge through to wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow.

Tamim returned to the pavilion having hit 78 off 179 balls, and his teammates Mushfiqur and Shakib Al Hasan kept totting up the runs in his absence.

The hosts suffered a blow when Mushfiqur was sent packing, but Shakib managed to end the day unbeaten on 31.
