Manchester City's Phil Foden doubtful for Arsenal clash with foot injury

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola reveals that Phil Foden is a doubt for Friday's FA Cup fourth-round match with Arsenal due to a foot injury.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has confirmed that Phil Foden is an injury doubt for Friday's FA Cup fourth-round match with Arsenal.

The England international did not make the squad for Sunday's 3-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers, where Jack Grealish and Riyad Mahrez started in support of hat-trick hero Erling Braut Haaland.

Prior to Sunday's match, Foden was an unused substitute in the champions' 4-2 triumph over Tottenham Hotspur on Thursday, having only lasted 57 minutes of the Manchester derby defeat to Manchester United on January 14.

Speaking to the media after Sunday's win over Wolves, Guardiola revealed that Foden had sustained an issue with his foot during a clash with Aaron Wan-Bissaka at Old Trafford.

As a result, the 22-year-old is uncertain for the visit of Arsenal to the Etihad Stadium at the end of this week, with Guardiola saying: "It was an action in Old Trafford, jam with [Aaron] Wan-Bissaka.

"When he falls down he has a problem in his feet. He's struggling so far. Painful, two or three days rest, gets better, then down. We decide with the doctors to stay to recover well.

"We will see if he arrives to Arsenal, if he's not fit we wait until the next game at Spurs. Otherwise, he doesn't train well, he's a bit uncomfortable. That's why we decide with the doctors to have two or three days off and see if he gets better."

Foden has enjoyed another productive campaign in Man City colours, making 27 appearances in all competitions and coming up with nine goals and four assists.

The Englishman - who has started 13 Premier League matches for the champions this term - now has 54 goals and 37 assists to show from 196 games for Man City since coming through the club's youth academy.

Foden came up with a goal and assist in Man City's 4-0 rout of Chelsea in the third round of the FA Cup, but he could be the Citizens' only absentee for Friday's battle with Arsenal.

Ruben Dias and John Stones have both shaken off injury concerns to make themselves available this month, but the former was left on the bench for the weekend's win over Wolves.

Meanwhile, Arsenal number nine Gabriel Jesus will not have the chance to reunite with former club on the field this week, as the Brazilian is still recovering from knee surgery.

Reiss Nelson is also struggling with a thigh problem and is a doubt, while midfielder Mohamed Elneny and right-back Cedric Soares are nursing knocks and will need to be assessed.

Man City closed the gap on Arsenal at the top of the Premier League table to two points with victory over Wolves, but the Gunners re-established a five-point advantage after edging past Man United 3-2.

Following Friday's FA Cup tie, Arsenal will host Man City in the Premier League on February 15 - with the tie being rescheduled in the wake of Queen Elizabeth II's death - before Mikel Arteta returns to the Etihad again on April 26. body check tags ::
