Ahead of Tuesday's Champions League clash between Borussia Dortmund and Atletico Madrid, Sports Mole looks at the head-to-head record and previous meetings between the two clubs.

Borussia Dortmund will welcome Atletico Madrid to Signal Iduna Park on Tuesday evening for the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final.

BVB have work to do if they are to progress to the semi-finals of the competition, as they trail 2-1 from the first leg in the Spanish capital last week.

Rodrigo De Paul and Samuel Lino were on the scoresheet for Atletico in the first period, before Sebastien Haller came up with a goal for Dortmund in the latter stages.

The two teams will now go to battle once again, with Atletico having a lead to protect in what is shaping up to be a fascinating quarter-final tie in the Champions League.

Here, Sports Mole takes an in-depth look at the head-to-head record and previous meetings between the two sides ahead of their clash in Germany on Tuesday night.

Head-to-head record

Previous meetings: 7
Dortmund wins: 3
Draws: 1
Atletico wins: 3

These two teams have locked horns on seven previous occasions, and there is nothing to separate them, with both sides recording three victories, while there has also been one draw.

Dortmund have nine goals to Atletico's seven, though, with four of those coming in a standout victory in the group stage of the Champions League in October 2018.

The two teams first met in the quarter-finals of the Cup Winners' Cup back in 1966, with the first leg of their last-eight clash finishing 1-1, before Dortmund won the second leg 1-0 to advance to the semi-finals.

The pair also went to battle in the group stage of the 1996-97 competition, and there were away wins for both, with BVB triumphing 1-0 in Madrid, before Atletico recorded a 2-1 victory in Germany.

Dortmund went on to win the Champions League that season, with the Bundesliga outfit famously beating Manchester United in the semi-finals before recording a 3-1 win over Juventus in the final.

As mentioned, BVB beat Atletico 4-0 at home in the group stage of the 2018-19 competition, but Atletico gained revenge on home soil, recording a 2-0 victory.

Atletico know what it takes to beat Dortmund in Germany, having achieved it in October 1996, while any draw would also be enough for Diego Simeone's side to advance to the semi-final, where either Barcelona or Paris Saint-Germain will be waiting.
