Sports Mole analyses the Champions League match between Bayern Munich and Roma at the Allianz Arena.

Bayern Munich claimed a 2-0 victory over Roma to book their place in the last 16 of the Champions League.

Franck Ribery gave the Germans the lead in the first half and Mario Gotze added a second after the break to make the points safe.

Here, Sports Mole takes a closer look at the events that unfolded at the Allianz Arena.

ROMA

Was the result fair?

There can be no arguments that the better team came out on top, but Bayern's winning margin could have been far greater. They were in control right from the kickoff and they never gave their opponents a sniff of the ball. It was a surprise that it took them until nearly the end of the first half to go in front, but from that moment a victory never seemed in doubt.

Bayern Munich's performance

Bayern weren't quite able to match the heights of their 7-1 win against Roma from last month, but once again they proved far too good for their opponents. They dominated possession from the kickoff and finished the night with a commanding 71% of the ball. It could quite easily have been more than 2-0, as they missed a host of other chances to find the net. The most important thing for Pep Guardiola was to see his team reach the last 16 and they are already through as group winners with two games to spare.

Roma's performance

From the start, it seemed that Roma were more interested in keeping the score down than trying to win the match. They very rarely threatened and had only two shots on target, which both came when they were two goals down. Rudi Garcia's side must be given some credit for a vastly improved defensive performance compared to their last Champions League match. As things stand in Group E, they are still second and can book their place in the knockout stages with a win over CSKA Moscow in three weeks.

Sports Mole's man of the match

Franck Ribery: The Frenchman came in for the absent Arjen Robben and was involved in most of his team's best moves. He broke the deadlock with a well-taken goal and showed his class throughout.

Biggest gaffe

Unlike when the teams last met, the goals that Roma conceded were down to great play from Bayern rather than glaring defensive mistakes. In fact, the German side should really have scored more goals after having 23 shots, with David Alaba and Philipp Lahm missing glaring opportunities.

Referee's performance

It was not the most strenuous of evenings for referee Cuneyt Cakir. He only had to give out one booking to Xabi Alonso, which was fully warranted for a foul on Juan Iturbe. The official was also called into action after Radja Nainggolan went down in the box under pressure from Manuel Neuer, but he correctly ruled that the keeper had not made any contact with the midfielder.

What next?

Bayern Munich: Bayern face a trip to Eintracht Frankfurt in the Bundesliga on Saturday.

Roma: The Giallorossi are also in league action and host Torino on Sunday.
