Borussia Dortmund recovered from a slow start to cause Bayern Munich numerous problems during an entertaining first half at Westfalenstadion.
Bayern dominated possession in the opening 20 minutes as Dortmund looked in danger of getting overrun.
However, the hosts grabbed a foothold in the game midway through the half and threatened to break the deadlock.
Kevin Grosskreutz's low cross, which looked destined to find Marco Reus, was gathered brilliantly under pressure by Manuel Neuer.
Jakub Blaszczykowski then had two goal-bound shots blocked by David Alaba, before Reus stung the palms of Neuer.
At the other end, Manuel Friedrich, playing his first competitive match of the season, was caught out of position and nearly punished, but Roman Weidenfeller came to Dortmund's rescue to thwart Thomas Muller.
The best chance of the half fell to Mario Mandzukic late on. Arjen Robben drilled in a volleyed cross from the left and, on the stretch, the Croatia forward was narrowly unable to make a telling contact.
