There was bad news for Blackburn almost straight away as Tommy Spurr got knocked out cold in the second minute, forcing Markus Olsson to come on and replace him.
A Shane Duffy header got Rovers an early goal, rising high against debutant Alex Smithies to nudge the ball over the line.
Karl Henry blazed an effort over the bar before Charlie Austin's snap-shot came close as the home side looked to equalise, but they could not break the stubborn Rovers defence as the referee blew for the break.
