A solitary goal by Zach Clough gives Bolton Wanderers a 1-0 win against Wigan Athletic in Saturday afternoon's FA Cup third-round clash at the Macron Stadium.

A solitary goal by Zach Clough has given Bolton Wanderers a 1-0 win against 2013 FA Cup winners Wigan Athletic in this afternoon's third-round clash at the Macron Stadium.

The first chance of the game fell to the hosts after nine minutes, Liam Trotter's ball slipping through to Liam Feeney, but opposition goalkeeper Ali Al-Habsi rushed off his line quickly to thwart the effort.

Just three minutes later, Bolton had the ball in the back of the net as Trotter converted a rebound from Clough's header, but the flag went up and the officials ruled out the goal.

Neil Lennon's charges continued to mount the pressure and came close again when David Wheater's header whizzed past the left-hand post.

Wigan, however, weathered the storm and, despite further chances by Heskey, Trotter and Feeney, the hosts were unable to break the deadlock by half time.

Bolton picked up from where they left off following the restart and saw Clough nearly net his debut goal as he powered towards the Latics box, but his goalbound shot was deflected wide.

At the other end, Adam Bogdan pulled off a great save to deny Adam Forshaw's close-range header away from danger, but the hosts went on to threaten again through the increasingly unplayable Clough, who came close on several occasions.

The 19-year-old eventually got himself on the scoresheet in the 76th minute when he latched on to a Trotter through-ball before calmly chipping the ball over Al-Habsi and into the net.

Wigan tried to counter moments later through James McClean, but the 25-year-old's thumping effort was kept out by Bogdan.

The 2013 cup winners were unable to get back into the game and were ultimately knocked out as Bolton entered into the hat for the fourth round.
