Brazil advanced into the quarter-finals of the World Cup after coming through a penalty shootout against Chile on Saturday.

The two sides could not be separated in 120 minutes of football, with David Luiz and Alexis Sanchez leaving the scores all level as the match headed for penalties.

The host nation won the shootout 3-2, however, with Neymar scoring what proved to be the winning penalty.

Here, Sports Mole takes a look at who impressed during the 90 minutes of action.

BRAZIL

Goal

Julio Cesar: Brilliant showing from the Queens Park Rangers stopper, who made two vital saves in the shootout in addition to a number of terrific stops during normal time. (9/10)

Defence

Dani Alves: Could not influence the match in forward areas, but was defensively sound for much of the 120 minutes. Can be pleased with his overall showing. (7/10)

David Luiz: Credited with Brazil's opener after tapping home from close range and demonstrated his ability on the ball with a number of sweeping passes. That said, still defensively suspect at times. (7/10)

Thiago Silva: Another classy showing from the centre-back, who has been arguably the best defender at the World Cup thus far. Cruised through the match. (8/10)

Marcelo: Like Alves, struggled to influence proceedings in forward areas, but was tidy in possession. (6/10)

Midfield

Fernandinho: Brought into the XI in place of Paulinho, but struggled to contain a dynamic Chilean midfield. Decent showing, but has had better days. (6/10)

Oscar: Plenty of nice touches, but did not really make his mark before being replaced by Willian in extra time. Needs to up his level in the quarter-finals. (6/10)

Luiz Gustavo: Tireless performance from the midfielder, who was simply everywhere. However, second-half booking means that he will miss the quarter-finals. (7/10)

Attack

Hulk: Poor first period, but was lively in the second when moved into a more central area. Might have had a penalty and was unlucky to have a goal disallowed for handball. (7/10)

Fred: Another disappointing performance from the experienced striker, who was never in the match. Was replaced by Jo just past the hour mark. (5/10)

Neymar: Brilliant first period, but struggled to make an impact in the second. That said, was still his nation's most dangerous player and showed nerves of steel to convert in the shootout. (7/10)

Substitutes

Jo: Missed a brilliant chance after entering in the second half, but did provide more movement in the final third. Perhaps lucky to gain a spot in the squad for this summer. (6/10)

Ramires: Provided legs in the latter stages of normal time and indeed extra time, but did not have too much of an impact in an attacking sense. (6/10)

Willian: Little time to make an impact after entering in the second half of extra time. Missed in the shootout. (5/10)

CHILE

Goal

Claudio Bravo: Wonderful performance from the Barcelona goalkeeper, who made a number of sensational saves throughout the 120 minutes. Did not deserve to be on the losing side. (9/10)

Defence

Gary Medel: Proper performance from the midfielder-turned-centre-back, who was held together with tape in the latter stages before leaving with injury. Was exceptional for his country. (8/10)

Gonzalo Jara: Handed Brazil the victory after missing what proved to be Chile's final penalty in the shootout, but can be pleased with his overall performance. (7/10)

Francisco Silva: Another that had a fine match. Centre-back was calm in possession and strong in the tackle. Contributed to a brilliant defensive performance. (8/10)

Midfield

Eugenio Mena: Not always involved, but performed a key role for his side. Calm in possession of the ball and influential in wide areas. (7/10)

Charles Aranguiz: Sensational performance from the midfielder, who was simply everywhere for his side. Might have won it for Chile with a powerful strike late on, but Cesar made a brilliant save. (8/10)

Marcelo Diaz: Saw a couple of long-range efforts whistle wide of the post, but his passing and influence in the Brazilian half was terrific. Also scored a brilliant penalty in the shootout. (8/10)

Mauricio Isla: Might have given away a first-half penalty after a clumsy challenge on Hulk, but recovered to produce a workmanlike display in midfield. (7/10)

Arturo Vidal: Clearly still not fully fit, but was incredible for his side. Played no part in extra time, but was seriously influential during his time on the field. (8/10)

Attack

Alexis Sanchez: The pick of the bunch. Brilliant goal and tireless work in forward areas. Was also prepared to drop back and help out his midfield. Did not deserve to be on the losing side. (9/10)

Eduardo Vargas: Played a part in Chile's equaliser, but did not have too much joy against Silva and Luiz. Was replaced by Felipe Gutierrez just before the hour mark. (6/10)

Substitutes

Felipe Gutierrez: Replaced Vargas early in the second period and quickly picked up the pace of the match. Steady performance from the attacker. (6/10)

Mauricio Pinilla: Rattled the crossbar with a brilliant effort late on, before missing Chile's first penalty in the shootout. (6/10)

Jose Rojas: Replaced Medel with 10 minutes of extra time remaining and slotted straight into the defence. (6/10)
