Sports Mole

Relegation-threatened Bristol City Women will welcome Liverpool Women to Ashton Gate for Saturday's Women's Super League contest.

While the hosts are propping up the league table, the Reds are sitting in fifth position after taking 29 points from 18 matches.

Match preview

Bristol City's fading survival hopes were dealt another blow in last Sunday's heavy 5-0 defeat to Arsenal at Meadow Park.

Beth Mead and Alessia Russo both scored braces alongside an Ella Powell own goal to condemn the Robins to a fifth consecutive loss.

Having mustered six points from their 18 league games, the Robins are seven points adrift from 11th-placed West Ham United with four games left to play against Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea and Everton.

Lauren Smith's side could be relegated this weekend if they lose to Liverpool and West Ham claim all three points in Sunday's game against Man City.

The hosts will certainly have their work cut out to take anything off Liverpool after losing each of their eight WSL home games this season.

Meanwhile, Liverpool are set to return to action for the first time since losing 4-1 to Manchester City before the international break.

Man City racked up four goals inside 50 minutes, before Liverpool netted a late consolation courtesy of a Khiara Keating own goal.

Despite seeing their five-game unbeaten league run come to an end, the Reds can be pleased with their overall performance during the 2023-24 campaign.

Liverpool have already surpassed last season's tally by six points and could still finish as high as fourth position, with two points separating them from Manchester United.

The Reds will fancy their chances of claiming all three points on Saturday, having won each of their previous three away games against Bristol City, including a 1-0 victory in January's FA Cup encounter.

Team News

The Robins are still expected to be without the services of Satara Murray, Chloe Mustaki and Shania Hayles.

Smith could be tempted to make a couple of changes, with Cecilie Struck and Carrie Jones among those who could be considered for a starting place.

Amelie Thestrup will offer one of Bristol City's main attacking threats after scoring nine of the club's 20 WSL goals this season.

Meanwhile, the visitors are unable to call upon the defensive duo of Niamh Fahey and Jasmine Matthews, who are both expected to return to team training next week.

Denmark international Sofie Lundgaard remains sidelined after she sustained a season-ending knee injury in last month's win against West Ham.

Liverpool boss Matt Beard has also confirmed that Dutch forward Shanice van de Sanden will miss Saturday's fixture due to injury.

Bristol City Women possible starting lineup:
Bentley; Powell, Connolly, Aspin, Struck, Napier; Morgan, Rodgers, Syme, Jones; Thestrup

Liverpool Women possible starting lineup:
Laws; Clark, Bonner, Fisk; Koivisto, Hobinger, Nagano, Holland, Hinds; Kiernan, Haug

We say: Bristol City Women 0-2 Liverpool Women

Bristol City have struggled to compete in their first season back in the top flight, and we think that their difficult campaign will continue with a defeat in Saturday's home meeting with Liverpool.
