Sports Mole takes a closer look at Burnley's victory over Ipswich Town in the Championship's early kickoff on Saturday.

Burnley capped off their wonderful season in the Championship with victory over Ipswich Town in their final home game earlier this afternoon.

Michael Kightly scored the only goal of the game nine minutes after half time to end Ipswich's hopes of reaching the playoffs.

Burnley came into the game with promotion assured after Easter Monday's victory over Wigan Athletic and enjoyed themselves before a medal ceremony to celebrate their achievement at full time.

Here, Sports Mole dissects the action at Turf Moor.

Was the result fair?

Yes, probably. There wasn't much in the game at all with Ipswich unable to really get going in a game they simply had to win. On another day, Ipswich might have taken a couple of first-half chances but they were punished and then never mounted a comeback.

Burnley's performance

Not Burnley's best performance this season, nowhere near, but manager Sean Dyche won't care a jot as his players didn't slack off after Monday's promotion party. He said beforehand that he had demanded a solid display and that's exactly what he got. No silly mistakes and no goals conceded - perfect. Chances were few and far between and Burnley took one of theirs with the easiest of finishes for Kightly after Danny Ings, who should have squared it, saw his shot saved. Thoughts will already be on next season and the Premier League. Burnley certainly deserve their place in the top flight, what a season for the Clarets.

Ipswich's performance

A disappointing end to what has been a great season for Mick McCarthy's side. They're now four points shy of Brighton & Hove Albion in sixth with just one game to go so can't reach the playoffs. After collecting just one point from their last three games, McCarthy will be gutted at how feebly the Tractor Boys' campaign has ended. However, on reflection, being in the mix until this late in the season is a vast improvement on where the Blues were when he took over at the end of 2012. Today, Ipswich struggled to really impose themselves and never looked like scoring. Crystal Palace loanee Jonathan Williams was their brightest spark and although he found plenty of space between the lines, he couldn't create many clear-cut openings.

Sports Mole's man of the match

Dean Marney: No-one in particular shone for the hosts, but Marney perhaps was the best. He put in an assured performance in the middle and made several surging runs into the area.

Biggest gaffe

Again, no clear choice here but we're going to be cruel on Burnley's top scorer Ings, who struck the bar with a close-range shot when he probably should have scored.

Referee performance

No hot tempers or anything like that for James Linington to deal with today. He refereed the game well, but could have perhaps pointed to the spot for an Ipswich penalty when a high foot was raised on Williams in the box.

What next?

Burnley: The Clarets finish the season with a trip to playoff-chasers Reading in a week.

Ipswich: McCarthy's men, meanwhile, host Sheffield Wednesday in their curtain-closer.
