Haris Seferovic scored the only goal of the game as Eintracht Frankfurt started their Bundesliga campaign with a 1-0 victory over Freiburg on Saturday afternoon.
Freiburg started the better of the two sides, but the lead belonged to Frankfurt in just the 15th minute thanks to Seferovic, who slotted past Roman Burki from a tight angle.
Chances proved to be rare in a tight first half, although it could easily have been 2-0 to Frankfurt had Lucas Piazon, on loan at the club from Chelsea, not fired over at the end of a fast counter-attack.
Freiburg looked capable of levelling the scores after the break, but they were guilty of wasting good opportunities, with Oliver Sorg dragging the ball wide after working space in the box.
The inability to finish off chances seemed to be contagious as Nelson Valdez missed the opportunity to double Frankfurt's advantage when he headed straight at Burki from three yards out.
Both sides were still pushing for goals in the closing stages, but Frankfurt looked solid as Kevin Trapp kept out Freiburg's best effort by denying Maximilian Philipp before the win was confirmed for the hosts.
