Sports Mole

Germany Women will look to claim consecutive victories when they face Colombia Women at the Sydney Football Stadium on Sunday.

The Europeans began the Women's World Cup 2023 with a comfortable victory over Morocco, while Colombia picked up all three points against South Korea.

Match preview

Germany produced a dominant display in their tournament opener to lay down a marker with a comprehensive 6-0 victory against Morocco.

Alex Popp netted a first-half brace to put Germany in control, before Klara Buhl added a third within a minute of the restart.

Martina Voss-Tecklenburg's side were given a helping hand as two own goals took the tally to five, and there was still time for Lea Schuller to round off the scoring in the 90th minute.

Germany are well set to continue their record of reaching the knockout stages at every edition of the Women's World Cup, and they could even secure their place in the last 16 with a game to spare.

They will be guaranteed a place in the top two if they claim all three points on Sunday and Morocco pick up at least a point against South Korea.

Colombia, meanwhile, began their third Women's World Cup finals with a crucial 2-0 victory over South Korea in Sydney.

Catalina Usme opened the scoring from the penalty spot, before Linda Caicedo doubled her country's advantage with a long-range strike in the 39th minute.

The South Americans managed to see out the remainder of the contest to claim all three points and extend their unbeaten run to four games.

They will now turn their attention to a difficult meeting against the Euro 2022 finalists, who are ranked as the second-best team in the world by FIFA.

Colombia will advance to the knockout rounds if they can claim a surprise victory and South Korea pick up maximum points against Morocco.

Team News

Germany have been dealt an injury blow ahead of Sunday's encounter after it was revealed that Felicitas Rauch is sidelined with a knee injury.

With no obvious replacement for Rauch, Germany may have to utilise Hoffenheim midfielder Chantal Hagel as a makeshift left-back.

There are also doubts surrounding the availability of Marina Hegering and Lena Oberdorf, who both missed the 6-0 win over Morocco.

As for Colombia, they have confirmed that Caicedo "is well and all is back to normal" after collapsing during a training session, but it still remains to be seen whether the Real Madrid winger will be passed fit to start against Germany.

Catalina Perez may be bracing herself for a busy outing in goal, but she will be offered protection by the central defensive pairing of Jorelyn Carabali and Daniela Arias.

Having scored in her last six international appearances, Usme will be looking to continue her fine form in Sunday's contest.

Germany Women possible starting lineup:
Frohms; Huth, Hendrich, Doorsoun-Khajeh, Hagel; Dabritz, Leupolz; Brand, Magull, Buhl; Popp

Colombia Women possible starting lineup:
Perez; C. Arias, Carabali, D. Arias, Vanegas; Bedoya, Montoya; Restrepo, Santos, Ramirez; Usme

We say: Germany Women 3-1 Colombia Women

With Germany's defence affected by injuries, we think that Colombia could cause their opponents one or two problems, but we believe that the Euro 2022 finalists have enough quality in the final third to get the goals required to claim all three points.
