Toni Kroos strikes at death for Germany against Spain

Toni Kroos scores a 90th-minute winner to light up what had been a rather dull international friendly between world champions Germany and Spain in Vigo.

Toni Kroos scored a 90th-minute winner as Germany snatched a 1-0 victory from their mundane friendly with fellow European heavyweights Spain this evening.

Two much-changed sides had previously underwhelmed in Vigo, but Kroos gave the blockbuster fixture a fitting finish with a screamer into the bottom corner.

Germany were already missing several of their World Cup-winning stars when Thomas Muller was forced off with an injury midway through the first period.

The Bayern Munich star collided forcefully with Sergio Ramos and was worryingly substituted five minutes later after failing in his attempts to run off his knock.

He created Germany's best first-half chance before his withdrawal as he crossed for club teammate Mario Gotze to firmly volley at an otherwise inactive Iker Casillas.

Playing at his home ground, Celta Vigo striker Nolito threatened for Spain when he turned Antonio Rudiger on the edge of the box before curling a shot which brought a good stop out of Ron-Robert Zieler.

Zieler, standing in for Manuel Neuer, thwarted Nolito again when he palmed away his free kick on the hour mark, and Spain were also experimenting with their keepers as Francisco Casilla replaced Casillas.

The Espanyol stopper unconvincingly kept out a long-range strike from Kevin Volland, but Zieler continued to impress as he clawed a Pedro lob away from goal after good work from man of the match Isco.

Both sets of players seemed content to play out a draw and it was perhaps this laziness from Spain which presented Kroos with the space from which he unleashed a powerful 25-yard shot past debutant Casilla.

The hosts had no time for a response as Joachim Low's side ended a memorable 2014 with another win.
