David Meyler's first-half goal helps Hull City claim a 1-0 win over Premier League outfit Swansea City in their League Cup third round clash at the KC Stadium.

A first-half David Meyler goal has helped Championship side Hull City claim a 1-0 win over Premier League outfit Swansea City in their League Cup third round clash at the KC Stadium.

The Swans were first to threaten when, after just three minutes, a free kick into the Tigers' box fell to Eder, but the Portuguese striker couldn't get his close-range effort on target.

Six minutes later Wayne Routledge teed up Leon Britton, but the Swansea skipper dragged his low effort from distance well wide of goal, while at the other end, Meyler's shot from distance was palmed over by Kristoffer Nordfeldt.

The visitors nearly then opened the scoring just after the quarter-hour mark when goalkeeper Eldin Jakupovic's clearance was charged down by Eder and came back off the post.

Gylfi Sigurdsson then hesitated on the rebound, which allowed the Tigers defence to clear the ball out of danger, but moments later Routledge went clean through on goal from Ki Sung-yueng's pass, though the resulting shot was tame.

The deadlock was broken a few minutes before half time courtesy of Meyler, who pounced to convert Shaun Maloney's saved header on the rebound to put the Championship side into the lead.

Hull continued to impress after the restart, with Maloney's well-struck effort in the 49th minute bringing a diving save out of Nordfeldt in the Swans goal.

Just three minutes later the visitors had the ball in the back of the net, as Routledge rifled home after being put through by Matt Grimes, but the move was ruled out for offside.

Routledge was involved again moments later when he pulled the ball pack to Ki, but the South Korea international was only able to side-foot wide from just inside the box.

Swansea became increasingly desperate as they bid to get back into the game, with Bartley's looping header from Sigurdsson's corner being cleared off the line from Robertson in the 77th minute and Sigurdsson clearing the bar from 20 yards.

The latter stages of the tie were relatively eventless as Garry Monk's side failed to launch any significant late attacks, allowing Hull to see out the game and progress through to the next round of the competition.
