Dave Jones: "Weed out" troublesome fans

Dave Jones urges well-behaved fans to help "weed out" troublemakers after the incident involving Aaron Cawley and Chris Kirkland during Sheffield Wednesday's match with Leeds.

Sheffield Wednesday manager Dave Jones has urged football supporters to "weed out" the problem causers among them in order to reduce the amount of crowd trouble.

Jones was the subject of vile chants by Leeds United supporters during the Owls' match at Elland Road, during which home supporter Aaron Cawley came onto the pitch and attacked Owls goalkeeper Chris Kirkland.

Cawley has since been jailed for 16 weeks and handed a five-year football banning order after pleading guilty to assault and entering the pitch.

Jones believes that it is up to the well-behaved fans to help isolate such troublemakers and prevent such incidents happening in the future.

He said: "I've apologised to the good supporters and I think now we've got to draw a line under it, it's getting a bit tedious, but I will say again the fans in the end are the only ones who can stop it.

"The stewards are there to help show people to their seats, they're not there to fight or control the fans, while the police were there in force in all their riot gear and is that right?

"For me it's the fans who still have a responsibility to kick out the minority of hooligans. It's down to the good supporters, and they are in the majority, to weed out the types we saw on Friday night."

Jones succeeded the sacked Gary Megson as Wednesday boss in March of this year.
