Afternoon all! The World Cup might have only just finished, but pre-season preparations for the new season are well underway. This afternoon, Liverpool take to the field for their first friendly of the summer, with Danish outfit Brondby providing the opposition in Copenhagen. Right, let me bring you the team news.
TEAMS:BRONDBY: Hradecky; Semb, Durmisi, Holst, Albrechtsen; Szymanowski, Ormskov, Kahlenberg, Norgaard; Elmander, Makienok
LIVERPOOL: Jones; Kelly, Ilori, Agger, Smith; Lucas, Rossiter, Coutinho; Suso, Borini, Teixeira
TEAMS:BRONDBY: Hradecky; Semb, Durmisi, Holst, Albrechtsen; Szymanowski, Ormskov, Kahlenberg, Norgaard; Elmander, Makienok
LIVERPOOL: Jones; Kelly, Ilori, Agger, Smith; Lucas, Rossiter, Coutinho; Suso, Borini, Teixeira
So there we have it. Daniel Agger captains Liverpool against his former side, while there are also spots in the XI for Suso and Fabio Borini. Coutinho and Lucas also start having not travelled with the Brazil squad for this summer's World Cup. Brondby, meanwhile, have former Bolton Wanderers and Norwich City forward Johan Elmander in their XI. Former West Bromwich Albion defender Martin Albrechtsen also starts, while Thomas Kahlenberg will skipper the team from midfield.
These two sides have met on three previous occasions, with the last competitive clash arriving in October 1995, when the Danes eliminated Liverpool from the UEFA Cup with a 1-0 win. The pair also have history in terms of transfers, with centre-back Daniel Agger making the move from Brondby to Liverpool in 2006.
Brondby have 10 Danish league titles to their name, but the 2013-14 campaign proved to be a disappointing one for the club. They finished in fourth position in the table, some 10 points behind the winners AaB, but they were just four points from second-place Copenhagen. As a result, Brondby will compete in the early qualifying rounds of the Europa League.
This match also marks a special occasion for Brondby, who are celebrating their 50th anniversary having formed back in 1964. It is also the Danish club's final game before their league campaign begins against Midtjylland this weekend. Last week, Brondby faced English opposition last week in the shape of Bolton Wanderers, who held the club to a 1-1 draw. Liverpool, however, are a new challenge.
Liverpool, meanwhile, enter a new era without a certain Luis Suarez, who has moved on to Barcelona. The Uruguayan's 31 league goals last season helped Liverpool finish second in the Premier League, but it will be a new challenge for the club in the new campaign. This particular match is a chance for Rodgers to take a look at a number of his younger and indeed squad players.
Here we go then. Both sets of players join us on the pitch for the first period. Following the completion of the pre-match handshakes and the exchanging of flags, we will be ready to get this fixture underway.
Plenty of Liverpool fans in attendance for this clash in Copenhagen. One thing is for certain, Brondby will provide stern opposition at this stage of their preparations. It is a 29,000 sell-out here. Right, Liverpool get the first 45 minutes underway on this beautiful early evening in Denmark. Let's hope for a cracker!
Today's game is more about fitness levels for Liverpool, but there are a number of players that will want to impress. It has been a fairly low-key opening, with Brondby enjoying possession in their own half. Just a reminder that the Danish outfit begin their league campaign this weekend.
Possession football from Liverpool, with Coutinho and Lucas enjoying plenty of the ball in the middle of the park. Kelly has some space down the right moments later, but cuts inside to Coutinho and the danger is eventually cleared. Just a few signs that the English side are starting to take control of the ball.
Half-chance for Liverpool as Coutinho shows wonderful feet outside the box before sliding a pass into Borini, but the striker cannot control at the vital moment and Hradecky is out to claim. Brondby are down the other end with Elmander moments later, but Kelly is across to clear. High-tempo start to proceedings.
It has been a tidy start from Rossiter, with the 17-year-old enjoying plenty of the ball in the Liverpool midfield. The home side have a period of possession moments later and they force a free kick outside the box when Lucas brings Norgaard to the ground...
... Durmisi takes the resulting set piece, but Jones is on hand to collect. Liverpool are down the other end with Borini moments later, but Brondby are back in numbers and eventually Coutinho fires one wide.
Brondby have a penalty shout as Smith blocks a cross from Elmander, but the referee is not interested. Liverpool are down the other end with Borini moments later, but once again the Italian is forced back following a period of defensive pressure from the home side. No real chances for either side thus far.
CHANCE! The best chance of the match thus far falls to the home side as Elmander turns inside the Liverpool box before attempting to find a strike on goal, but the Swedish international stumbles at the vital moment and it goes behind for a goal kick. Brondby are starting to look dangerous in attack.
Coutinho is again involved for Liverpool outside the Brondby box, but the Brazilian cannot move past the challenge of Semb at the vital moment. Liverpool work the ball from left to right moments later, but Borini cannot meet a cross from Kelly. Still goalless, but there is a good tempo to the match.
Half-chance for Suso this time following bright work outside the Brondby box, but his effort is deflected wide of the post. The resulting corner is delivered towards Borini, but the Brondby stopper makes the save.
Another half-chance for Liverpool as Coutinho shows smart feet outside the box before striking one towards goal, but his effort was always moving wide of the post. Moments before, Smith had found some space in a wide area before delivering towards Suso, but the former Almeria loan player lost his footing.
Kahlenberg stands over a free kick outside the Liverpool box, but Agger is on hand to clear at the far post. Liverpool are down the other end moments later with Coutinho, who eventually finds Suso in a wide position, but the move breaks down at the vital moment. End-to-end football with 22 minutes on the clock.
SUB! Liverpool are forced into an early change here as Ilori leaves the field with a suspected hamstring injury. His replacement is Stewart, who was signed from Tottenham Hotspur this summer.
GOAL! Brondby 1-0 Liverpool (Norgaard)
Brondby have the lead after 23 minutes as Norgaard curls a brilliant effort into the top corner following a poor pass from Stewart. Jones might have done better, but it was right in the corner of the net.
Brondby have come to life in the last couple of moments with Szymanowski causing all sorts of problems in the final third. The attacker breaks past two defenders before moving into the Liverpool box, but Agger is out to clear. It has not been the best of starts for Stewart, who gave the ball away once more.
CHANCE! Opportunity for Liverpool to level as Agger finds some space inside the box, but his effort is blocked by Holst at the vital moment. We have a real game on our hands now.
CHANCES! Two more chances in quick succession for Liverpool, but twice the Brondby stopper denies Rossiter and then Coutinho from close range. It has been a strong response from the English side.
Half-chance for Brondby this time as Elmander meets a deep corner at the far post, but his header is over the crossbar. For a pre-season match, this has been really great stuff. End-to-end football and chances for both teams. Little over 10 minutes of the first period remaining and the home side lead 1-0.
Not too much to report in terms of chances in the last couple of minutes, but the tempo remains high. In truth, that is not much of a surprise with Brondby getting their league campaign underway this weekend. They are way ahead of Liverpool in terms of fitness and preparation. Little over 10 mins of the first half to play.
Slightly untidy period of the match in the last couple of moments, with the referee just stopping play following a number of late challenges. In truth, it has not been that type of match. Brondby enjoy possession in the Liverpool half moments later, but Kelly challenges Elmander in a wide position.
The tempo has just dropped in the last few minutes, which is not much of a surprise at this stage of the half. Both sides are expected to make a number of changes at the interval. Possession football from Liverpool in the final third, but Stewart and Suso have not had too much luck in wide positions thus far.
Half-chance for Liverpool as Coutinho combines with Smith in a wide position, but the left-back just loses his composure at the final moment and the ball trickles into the arms of the goalkeeper.
Well, this first half has flown past. Let's be honest, sometimes pre-season fixtures are not great, but this has been very entertaining. Both sides have tried to force the issue, but Brondby deserve their lead. That said, it has been a strong response from Liverpool in the last 10 minutes or so.
CHANCE! Opportunity for Liverpool to equalise in the final chance of the first period, but Lucas is denied from close range after breaking into the box.
HALF-TIME: Brondby 1-0 Liverpool
So there we have it. The referee brings the first period to an end, with Brondby leading 1-0 courtesy of a fine finish from
Christian Norgaard, who bent one into the top corner following a mistake from Stewart.
Liverpool have had a couple of nervy moments in defensive areas, but the Premier League side did produce a strong response after falling behind. Coutinho has looked the most likely, while Suso and Borini have also been bright in spells. I would be surprised if we had seen the last of the goals this evening.
BENCH WATCH: Liverpool have already been forced into one change, with Ilori leaving the field with an injury and Stewart entering as the centre-back's replacement. Brendan Rodgers will also surely look to give minutes to the likes of Allen, Ibe, Coady, Skrtel and Flanagan in the second period. Brondby, meanwhile, also have plenty of options in the shape of Hasani, Da Silva and Crone.
Here we go then. Both sets of players join us on the pitch for the second 45 minutes. It must be said that there is a wonderful atmosphere inside the stadium as Brondby get the second half of action underway.
SUBS! Plenty of changes from Liverpool at the interval, with Allen, Skrtel and Flanagan among those that have entered. I shall confirm who has departed when the information becomes available!
GOAL! Brondby 1-1 Liverpool (Peterson)
GOAL! Brondby 1-1 Liverpool (Peterson)
Liverpool level with 48 minutes on the clock as Ibe shows brilliant pace to drive down the left before cutting a cross back to Peterson, who cannot miss from close range. Brilliant work from Ibe.
Liverpool level with 48 minutes on the clock as Ibe shows brilliant pace to drive down the left before cutting a cross back to Peterson, who cannot miss from close range. Brilliant work from Ibe.
A different Liverpool have turned up in the second period, with the likes of Coady and Phillips, who have also entered, enjoying plenty of the ball. Ibe again threatens in a wide area before driving a cross into the box, but the danger is cleared. Brondby just need a period of possession here.
Half-chance for the home side as Elmander finds some space in the final third before driving a low cross towards Norgaard, but Jones is on hand to clear, before Liverpool break down the other end once more. I would be surprised if we had seen the last of the goals due to the end-to-end nature of the contest.
CHANCE! Opportunity for the home side to threaten from a free kick, which Kahlenberg curls towards the top corner, but it just moves wide of the post. Much better from Brondby.
Not too much to report in terms of chances in the last minute or two, but the home side have started to enjoy more of the ball in forward positions. The referee, meanwhile, has been forced to stop the flow of proceedings following a number of late challenges. Little over 30 minutes of this pre-season friendly to play.
Wisdom threatens for Liverpool after breaking down the right, but his cross is straight into the arms of the Brondby goalkeeper. It must be said that there is a brilliant atmosphere inside the stadium at the moment, with the home supporters making their voices heard. It has been an extremely entertaining pre-season clash.
SUBS! Couple of changes for Brondby as Nunez and Thygesen replace Albrechtsen and Elmander.
Again it is bright work from Ibe, who drives past three defenders before firing one towards the bottom corner, but the Brondby stopper makes the save. Ibe has looked very impressive since entering proceedings.
CROSSBAR! Brondby come close to regaining the lead as Kahlenberg strikes a free kick from outside the box, but his effort rattles the crossbar. Brilliant effort from the skipper.
Another half-chance for the home side as Brondby gain another free kick just outside the box, but this time Kahlenberg's effort is straight into the wall. Strong pressure from the Danish outfit.
Well, what a 69 minutes of football this has been. Open football from both sides, which is not always the case in pre-season. Liverpool continue to threaten with the pace of Ibe, but the youngster has been caught offside twice in the last couple of minutes. Little over 20 minutes of football remaining this evening.
CHANCE! Another chance for Liverpool as Ibe feed Flanagan, who drives a low cross into Allen, but his effort is straight into the arms of the goalkeeper. Again Ibe is involved for the English side.
SUB! Another change for the home side as Szymanowski is replaced by Hasani.
Not too much to report in terms of chances in the last couple of moments, but the home side have started to enjoy more possession in the final third. Liverpool, however, have been caught by the offside trap in the last few minutes. Still 1-1, but I would not bet against a winner in this match.
The atmosphere has quietened down in the last few minutes, which has been matched by matters on the field. Brondby continue to force the issue in the final third, but Liverpool have been defensively sound in the second period. I would not bet against a winner in the final 15 minutes of this match.
SUBS! Three more changes for the home side as Holst, Durmisi and Norgaard are replaced by Almeback, Da Silva and Phiri.
CHANCE! Opportunity for the home side as Almeback delivers a dangerous cross towards the near post, but Skrtel is on hand to clear at the vital moment. Brilliant defending from the Slovakian.
CHANCE! Wonderful chance for Liverpool to take the lead as Ibe drives into the Brondby box before striking towards goal, but his effort is straight at the goalkeeper once more.
CHANCE! Wonderful chance for Liverpool to take the lead as Ibe drives into the Brondby box before attempting to find the bottom corner, but his effort is straight at the goalkeeper.
CROSSBAR! Brondby have a wonderful chance of their own as Hasani strikes a free kick from outside the box, but his effort smashes against the crossbar. So close for the home side.
SUB! Liverpool change their goalkeeper as Daniel Ward replaces Jones.
End-to-end football in the last couple of moments, with both sides threatening to find a winner. In truth, a 1-1 draw would not be the worst result for either of these two teams. The supporters can be heard as we approach the final five minutes this evening.
Not too much to report in terms of chances in the last couple of minutes, but both sides are still committing numbers in the final third. Just a reminder that next up for Liverpool is a trip to the US. Brondby, meanwhile, open their league campaign this weekend. No rest for those involved in the Danish top flight.
Another half-chance for the home side as Da Silva meets a free kick at the near post, but his effort just moves high of the crossbar. On the balance of play, a 1-1 draw is just about the correct result here.
Half-chance for Makienok as the Brondby forward breaks into the Liverpool box, but he loses control at the vital moment and the danger is cleared. All the late pressure is coming from the home side.
GOAL! Brondby 2-1 Liverpool (Hasani)
Brondby surely win it as Hasani breaks into the Liverpool box before finding the top corner. Wonderful work from the midfielder and Liverpool have been beaten at the death here.
FULL-TIME: Brondby 2-1 Liverpool
So there we have it. Hasani scores late on to hand Brondby a 2-1 win over Liverpool. That was a thoroughly entertaining pre-season clash. Thanks for joining Sports Mole for the action. Goodnight!
