Manchester City's Pep Guardiola calls for ref help after Raheem Sterling "trip"

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola says that referees require more assistance after a controversial penalty was awarded when Raheem Sterling tripped over his own foot.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has suggested that he did not like the manner of his side's second goal against Shakhtar Donetsk on Wednesday night.

City were awarded a penalty when Raheem Sterling went down inside the area, but replays showed that the winger stubbed his foot into the ground rather than any contact being made by Mykola Matviyenko.

The incident led to City going 2-0 ahead in a game which they eventually won by a 6-0 scoreline, and Guardiola has said that he wants officials to be given more help in the future.

The Spaniard told BT Sport: "We realised it wasn't a penalty. We don't like to score in that situation.

"You know VAR and what it is - the referee must be helped because they don't want to make mistakes. The game is so fast these days. It takes 10 seconds for somebody to say something to the referee."

City require one point from their final two fixtures in Group F to earn a place in the knockout stages.
