Manchester City out to break five-goal Premier League record against Southampton

Manchester City will aim to become the first team in Premier League history to win four successive home games by a five-goal margin against Southampton on Saturday.

Manchester City will aim to break yet another Premier League record when they welcome Southampton to the Etihad Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Citizens made a less-than-ideal start to their title defence with defeat at Tottenham Hotspur but have since marched to three consecutive victories over Norwich City, Arsenal and Leicester City.

Pep Guardiola's side trounced Norwich and Arsenal by 5-0 scorelines at the Etihad earlier this season, while they also hit a quintet of unanswered goals past Everton at home on the final day of the 2020-21 campaign.

Should City win by another five-goal margin against the Saints this weekend, they will become the first team in Premier League history to register four consecutive home victories of such a scoreline.

Not since Everton in 1931 has a team managed to achieve that remarkable feat, while Aston Villa were the first to put their name in the history books with that record in 1899.

City lie fifth in the Premier League table ahead of the visit of Southampton, who have lost eight of their nine away games to the reigning top-flight champions since 2012. body check tags ::
