Nemanja Matic: 'Manchester United deserved to lose'

Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic admits that his side "deserved" to exit the Champions League to Sevilla last night.

Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic has admitted that the "better" team won in his side's Champions League exit to Sevilla last night.

Two late goals from Sevilla sub Wissam Ben Yedder saw the Red Devils crash out of the competition at the last-16 stage on home turf, leaving the FA Cup as their only realistic chance of silverware this term.

Speaking to MUTV after the game, Matic said that his side were left "sad" by the result but conceded that the Spanish outfit had "deserved to go through" to the quarter-finals.

"We know the supporters are sad because of the result, we are sad too and we have to go back to winning ways and I hope the team reaction will be good," he said.

"We are not happy because we are out of the Champions League but this is football and we have to focus on the FA Cup and focus for the league but we have to say congratulations to Sevilla, they played really well and they deserved to go through.

"There is no excuse, we had a big game against Liverpool, we won and we came in to this game with high confidence. But they played better than us and they deserved it.

"We have to forget this, to see where we made mistakes and what we have to to do better, Saturday is a new game and life goes on and this is football so we have to accept that."

Next up for United is a quarter-final FA Cup encounter with Brighton & Hove Albion at Old Trafford on Saturday.
