Steve McClaren is reportedly moving closer to becoming the next head coach of Newcastle United.
It is thought that the 54-year-old spoke to the St James' Park hierarchy earlier this week.
McClaren left Derby County last week after failing to guide the Rams into the Championship playoffs.
The former England manager is expected to succeed current Newcastle boss John Carver, who will reportedly revert to a coaching role under the new regime.
According to Sky Sports News, Newcastle are close to appointing McClaren, following successful talks.
McClaren has also managed Middlesbrough, FC Twente, Wolfsburg and Nottingham Forest.
