Sports Mole previews Tuesday's EFL Cup clash between Northampton Town and Wycombe Wanderers, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.
Sports Mole

The Sixfields Stadium plays host to Northampton Town and Wycombe Wanderers on Tuesday as the teams battle it out for a place in the next round of the EFL Cup.

Both sides were unable to come out on top in their respective last outings and will be looking to return to winning ways in this one.

Match preview

Northampton Town had to settle for a point in Saturday afternoon's meeting with Grimsby Town at Blundell Park, which ended in a 1-1 stalemate.

Jon Brady's men took the lead in the 74th minute through Sam Hoskins, but they were pegged back two minutes from the end of regulation time by Jordan Maguire-Drew.

Consequently, the Cobblers have dropped down to eighth place in the League Two table but are currently outside the last playoff spot only on goal difference.

Coming up next is the challenge of an opposing outfit who have emerged victorious on four of their most recent five visits across all competitions.

Having recently picked up a first home win in five outings, Tuesday's hosts now go in search of back-to-back wins on their own turf for the first time since February.

Wycombe Wanderers fell to a disappointing 3-0 defeat against Bolton Wanderers at the University of Bolton Stadium in Saturday's lunchtime contest.

First-half goals from Kyle Dempsey and Aaron Morley left Gareth Ainsworth's men with a mountain to climb before Dempsey grabbed his second of the game to put the result beyond doubt.

The Chairboys are ninth in the League One standings and will be looking to put together to good run of result to aid their quest to secure promotion.

Currently on a run of five straight away defeats by a total score of 12-1, Tuesday's visitors have it all to do as they look to avoid another thrashing away from home.

Team News

With three goals in his last two appearances for Northampton, 29-year-old Sam Hoskins is definitely one to keep an eye on here.

Peter Abimbola missed the home side's most recent outing with a knock, and the midfielder is an injury concern for Tuesday's match.

Joshua Blunkell could be handed his Wycombe debut in this one having had to make do with a place on the bench in each of the previous two games.

Daryl Horgan will be pushing for a return to the starting lineup after the Ireland international was brought on as a second-half substitute last time out.

Northampton Town possible starting lineup:
Burge; Koiki, Guthrie, Sherring, Magloire; Hoskins, McWilliams, Sowerby, Pinnock; Hylton, Appere

Wycombe Wanderers possible starting lineup:
Dickinson; Wheeler, Grimmer, Tafazolli, Jacobson; Gape, Scowen; McCleary, Horgan, Mehmeti; Vokes

We say: Northampton Town 1-2 Wycombe Wanderers

The teams have had clean sheets hard to come by of late so we are expecting goals at both ends here. That said, we are also anticipating a narrow victory for the away side at the end of the 90 minutes.
