Sports Mole analyses the Premier League game between Norwich City and Southampton.

Norwich City recorded their first Premier League win of the season as they beat Southampton 1-0 at Carrow Road.

In the first half, the Saints could have taken a surprise lead when Adam Lallana saw his volley crash off the post and bounce clear.

After the break, Norwich upped the ante and took the lead through a fine individual goal from Nathan Redmond in the 68th minute, which was enough to secure all three points for Chris Hughton's side.

Here, Sports Mole takes a closer look at the action between the two sides.

Match statistics:

Norwich:
Shots 11
On target 1
Possession 40%
Corners 11
Fouls 6

Southampton:
Shots 7
On target 2
Possession 60%
Corners 3
Fouls 11

Was the result fair?

On the balance of play, Norwich really upped the ante in the second half and although the statistics might not show, they had the better of the opportunities as the ball just did not fall their way. The match was short on quality but Redmond produced the one moment of magic as he unlocked the Saints defence and fired an effort into the bottom corner to seal the win for his side.

Norwich's performance

Manager Hughton will be pleased with how his side defended as they were not really troubled by the Saints bar the one effort from Lallana. Going forward the final ball was poor at times but in the end the Canaries got the quality they needed from Redmond.

Southampton's performance

Boss Mauricio Pochettino may be slightly concerned by this performance as his side did not really create anything despite their attacking players on show. Pablo Osvaldo drifted in and out of the game as did Rickie Lambert. Victor Wanyama was anonymous in a midfield that really struggled in the second half. Defensively they were sound, until they were undone by Redmond.

Sports Mole's man of the match

Nathan Redmond: He scored the winning goal and was a thorn in the side of the Saints all afternoon. Whenever he got the ball, something looked likely to happen. His crossing was excellent compared to that from the other widemen on show. His goal was outstanding as he cut in from the left and drilled a right-footed shot past Boruc, who stood no chance.

Biggest gaffe

There were not many mistakes on show, but referee Howard Webb did deny Norwich a clear-cut penalty in stoppage time in the second half when Robert Snodgrass was hauled down by Jose Fonte.

Referee performance

Howard Webb had a decent game bar the penalty decision at the end. He kept his cards in his pocket as he did not book a single player at Carrow Road.

What next?

Norwich: The Canaries face Tottenham Hotspur when the Premier League returns on September 14

Southampton: Pochettino's side play West Ham United at St Mary's Stadium on September 15.
