Sports Mole

Aiming to pick up consecutive victories for the first time in half a decade, Philippines welcome Chinese Taipei to Rizal Memorial Stadium on Monday afternoon.

On the other hand, the away side make the trip to Manila seeking to return to winning ways in what is only their second outing since the turn of the year.

Match preview

The Philippines just about did enough to see off the threat of Nepal and claim a narrow victory in Thursday's contest involving the sides which ended 1-0.

Javier Gayoso netted the only goal of the game in the fifth minute of the second period to earn Michael Weiss's men a hard-fought triumph.

Consequently, the Street Dogs have now ended a run of four consecutive defeats across all competitions where they only managed to find the back of the net on one occasion.

Next on the menu is the challenge of an opposing outfit who boast just one victory from the last six meetings between the teams dating back to 2010.

However, that solitary win did come in the most recent edition of this fixture as Monday's hosts fell to a comprehensive 3-0 defeat in a friendly match-up.

Chinese Taipei played out a highly-entertaining 2-2 share of the spoils against Thailand in Friday's encounter at Kaohsiung National Stadium.

Gary White's men took the lead in dramatic fashion as Kritsada Kaman inadvertently turned the ball past his own goalkeeper before Teerasil Dangda's strike and a Wang Ruei own goal turned the game on its head, only for Ting-Yang Chen to restore parity three minutes from time.

As a result, the East Asians have now managed to avoid defeat in consecutive matches for the first time since 2019 after which they went on a 10-game losing run.

Having recorded a rare clean sheet away from home in their most recent outing on the road, Monday's visitors will be looking to keep things tight at the back en route to a positive result.

Team News

After coming off the bench to grab the winner last time out, the Philippines' Javier Gayoso is in line to be rewarded with a place in the starting lineup here.

This would see OJ Porteria dropped to the bench off the back of another disappointing outing for the 29-year-old, who boasts only two goals from his 37 international appearances to date.

Yen He-Sheng endured a short outing for Chinese Taipei against Thailand as he suffered a first-half injury scare, which looks set to keep him out of this one.

He-Sheng's replacement in the aforementioned game Ting-Yang Chen popped up with a late leveller, further boosting his chances of earning a recall to the XI.

Philippines possible starting lineup:
Deyto; Sato, Steuble, Murga, Curran; Ingreso, Kekkonen, Reyes; Ott, Daniels, Gayoso

Chinese Taipei possible starting lineup:
Wen-Chieh; Fong, Wu, Ruei, Wang; Estevez, Chen, Wu, Yu; Yao-hsing, Chen

We say: Philippines 2-1 Chinese Taipei

Buoyed by their impressive display last time out, Chinese Taipei will head into this one with the wind in their sails. The Philippines, meanwhile, also have reason to be confident ahead of Monday's meeting, which we expect to produce goals at both ends and a tight win for the hosts in the end.
