Reading midfielder Jem Karacan will miss the remainder of the season with a broken ankle.
The 23-year-old was substituted during Reading's 2-0 victory over Leeds United last Friday following challenges from Michael Brown and Danny Pugh.
He was sent for an X-ray which has now revealed that the Turk has suffered a break.
"I was gutted really, but it is just one of those things," Karacan told BBC Radio Berkshire. "I tried to walk on it but it gave way straight away and I knew something was up with it.
"The surgeon had a little look and it is still quite swollen. It looks as if I'll need an operation to help with the swelling and I'll just go from there."
Over the weekend Karacan's teammate, Jobi McAnuff, was highly critical of some of the tackles made by visiting Leeds.
