Sports Mole analyses the International Champions Cup match between Real Madrid and AC Milan in Shanghai.

Real Madrid claimed the China edition of the International Champions Cup after beating AC Milan in a penalty shootout in Shanghai on Thursday.

After the match finished goalless, the Spanish side clinched a narrow 10-9 victory after the spot kicks.

Rafael Benitez's side will add the trophy to the one won in Australia earlier this month.

Here, Sports Mole analyses the meeting at the Shanghai Stadium,

Was the result fair?

The sides were closely matched throughout, but AC Milan should have won it in normal time. Carlos Bacca had a golden opportunity to put the ball past Kiko Casilla late on and he did not make the most of it. While Real Madrid had more of the ball, it was the Italians that looked the more likely in front of goal throughout, and they will feel aggrieved to have lost out.

Real Madrid's performance

Rafael Benitez's side took a while to get going, creating few chances in the first half at the Shanghai Stadium. The introduction of Jese, James Rodriguez and Isco in the second half made them look more dangerous going forward, but there were very few efforts to trouble Diego Lopez and Gianluigi Donnarumma. The La Liga side were not at their best at the back either, with Pepe and Raphael Varane leaving too much room for the Milan wingers to exploit in the opening 45 minutes.

AC Milan's performance

The Serie A team made a bright start, but struggled to win the ball back from their opponents at times in both halves of the match. Milan's defending was clinical throughout, protecting their keepers well, but their finishing lacked accuracy when they were dominating proceedings, missing the chance to avoid the penalty shootout.

Sports Mole's man of the match

Kiko Casilla: Real Madrid's new goalkeeper had a few crucial saves to make in the second half, denying Bacca from the clearest-cut chance of the match. The shot-stopper also showed up when it mattered in the penalty shootout, scoring from the spot himself before saving Donnarumma's, securing the win for the Spanish side.

Biggest gaffe

Carlos Bacca's late chance really should have handed the Italian side the win, but it was his mistake in the penalty shootout that may have proved the most costly. The striker would have been one of the first names on the sheet for Milan in a penalty shootout, but he sliced his effort well wide. With Donnarumma saving Toni Kroos's attempt a few kicks later, Milan could have tied it up after five penalties apiece if Bacca had not missed.

What next?

Real Madrid: Real will be in action again on Tuesday when they face Tottenham Hotspur in another pre-season friendly at the Allianz Arena in Germany.

AC Milan: AC Milan will also be playing at the Allianz Arena on Tuesday straight after Real and Spurs. They take on Bayern Munich.
