New York Red Bulls failed to turn dominant possession into goals as they were held by Sporting Kansas City in a meeting of Eastern Conference heavyweights.

Kansas have already confirmed their place in the playoffs and lacked urgency in the early stages as New York searched for the victory that would ensure they qualified for the post-season.

Tim Cahill threatened early on for the Red Bulls as he had a shot blocked from close range after a flick-on from Rafa Marquez.

Kenny Cooper and Thierry Henry also went close but could not make the breakthrough against a spirited Sporting defence.

Table-topping Kansas grew in confidence in the late stages and nearly snatched victory through Kei Kamara, who forced a strong save onto the woodwork from Luis Robles.

The Red Bulls pressed in the final few minutes but were forced to settle for a point in a frustrating goalless draw which edges them tantalisingly close to confirming a playoff place.
