Strikes from Liam Feeney and Darren Pratley have given Bolton Wanderers a 2-1 half-time lead over Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough.
Bolton got off to the dream start when Feeney reacted quickest to fire the loose ball beyond Kieren Westwood after just two minutes.
The home side's first chance didn't come until the 15th minute, when Tom Lees climbed highest to meet Christopher Maguire's free kick, but the big defender could only head disappointingly wide.
Less than a minute later Lees returned the favour when he teed up Maguire on the edge of the Bolton area following a Wednesday corner, but Maguire's effort was blocked in the area, with referee Graham Scott waving away the home side's appeals for a penalty.
Pratley doubled Bolton's lead when he neatly controlled the ball in the box and fired beyond Westwood, but Wednesday pulled one back almost immediately when Maguire fired home from the penalty spot.
