A goal on his full debut from Lucas Joao and a further strike from Jose Semedo have given Sheffield Wednesday a 2-1 lead over Mansfield Town at half time at Hillsborough.
Alex Lopez hammered an effort over the top from long range as the hosts began at a high tempo, and Lopez was involved in the opener on 13 minutes. His free kick from the right found new signing Joao, who powered a header into the back of the net to put his side ahead.
The Owls doubled their lead just six minutes later when another new signing, Modou Sougou, picked out Semedo, who nodded home from close range.
It could have been 3-0 shortly before the break when Kieran Lee's cross was headed narrowly over the top of goal by Joao, before Ryan Tafazolli pulled one back for the Stags in first-half injury time.
