In a low-key opening first 25 minutes, Simon Cox fired over the bar from 25 yards in the 10th minute and Forest captain Andy Reid shot wide from a tight angle.
The home side had a couple of half-chances, which both fell the way of Connor Wickham, but the 20-year-old fired wide on both occasions.
