Sheffield Wednesday staged a late comeback to defeat Huddersfield Town 3-1 in their Championship clash at Hillsborough this afternoon.

Fernando Forestieri had the first opportunity of the game when he peeled off his marker to head Ross Wallace's cross at goal, but he put his effort wide of the post.

The Owls needed a good save from Keiren Westwood to keep the scores level as Sean Scannell latched on to a loose ball on the edge of the box, and he drilled his effort low towards goal, but the keeper made the stop with his legs.

Wallace got in behind the Huddersfield defence after Atdhe Nuhiu flicked the ball into his path, but the Scot could only fire his effort straight at Joe Murphy.

In the second half, Wallace caused further problems down the flank as he beat his man and crossed to the back post, but Lucas Joao could only fire his effort from a tight angle into the side-netting.

The Terriers took the lead in the 53rd minute when Kyle Dempsey lifted a cross into the box and Scannell made a surging run through the middle to guide a diving header past Westwood.

Wednesday pressed to get back into the game and came close when Wallace drove a strike towards the bottom corner, only to be denied by a goalline clearance from Dean Whitehead.

The Owls came closer to finding a leveller when Gary Hooper headed wide of the target after he latched on to a cross from the left from Daniel Pudil.

Minutes later the home side did equalise as Lucas Joao reacted first in the six-yard box to turn the ball home after Forestieri's first strike had been blocked on the line.

Wednesday completed their comeback to take the lead when Murphy made a fine save to stop a powerful strike from Forestieri, but Kieran Lee was there to fire in the rebound.

Joao completed the scoring for the home side in the 93rd minute when the Owls hit the visitors on the break and the striker held his composure to curl an effort beyond Murphy to secure the three points.

Carlos Carvalhal's men move up to eighth in the Championship as a result of their win, while the Terriers drop down to 21st place.
