Sports Mole takes a look at the key talking points from the 1-1 draw between Stoke City and Everton.

Leighton Baines scored a late penalty on Wednesday afternoon to earn Everton a 1-1 draw from their trip to the Britannia Stadium to face Stoke City.

Oussama Assaidi gave Stoke the lead just after the break with a fine low strike but Jermaine Pennant gifted the visitors a great opportunity in stoppage time with a foul on Leon Osman inside the box.

Baines made no mistake from 12 yards as the Champions League hopefuls claimed a point in dramatic fashion in the closing stages.

Below, Sports Mole takes a look at the key talking points from the game.

Was the result fair?

Stoke fans will certainly feel that their side deserved all three points but the hosts were made to pay for not going further ahead when on top for the first hour of the game. Everton were well short of their best but the amount of pressure they put on the hosts late on means that a draw probably was fair.

Stoke's performance

Mark Hughes will head home both impressed and frustrated by his team's performance this afternoon. Stoke were as good as they have been for a long time in the first half and they delighted the home supporters with their quick tempo and aggressive approach early on. However, Hughes will know that his team wasted a great opportunity to take full advantage of their superiority before letting Everton back in late on.

Everton's performance

Stoke were very impressive, but they would have been surprised by Everton's below-par display in the first half. A number of key players, including Steven Pienaar and Romelu Lukaku, has a very difficult afternoon as Everton seemed to lack any creativity for extended spells. However, Robert Martinez should be proud of how his team kept fighting until the final minute to secure what could be a vital point.

Sports Mole's man of the match

Glenn Whelan: Stoke defender Ryan Shawcross may feel that he could have won this award today but it's going to Whelan, who put in an impressive display on his return from suspension. It wasn't the type of performance that will steal many headlines but his accurate passing and tackling in midfield kept Stoke ticking over this afternoon.

Biggest gaffe

Pennant has to claim this honour for his silly mistake in stoppage time. Stoke were just a few minutes away from claiming a valuable victory but the substitute committed the foul on Osman which gifted Everton a penalty. He won't have been too popular after the game.

Referee performance

Andre Marriner frustrated the home supporters with a few of his decisions but he didn't have much choice over whether to point to the spot late on following Pennant's tackle on Osman.

What next?

Stoke: The Potters turn their attentions to the FA Cup on Saturday when they host Leicester City.

Everton: Martinez will once again be targeting success in the FA Cup when Everton face Queens Park Rangers on Saturday.
