Stoke City manager Mark Hughes has acknowledged that his side were made to pay for their mistakes in the 2-1 defeat to Southampton.
The Potters went into the contest two points ahead of the Saints in the table, but a double from Graziano Pelle earned the visitors a valuable win at the Britannia Stadium.
The 52-year-old told BBC Sport: "We have been on a decent run recently. We go into these games full of ambition but you have to be spot on with the details.
"At this level, if you make mistakes, you get punished. It is a harsh lesson. That has almost certainly been the case at home this season."
Stoke now sit in ninth position, but they remain just a point adrift of seventh place.
