Sunderland have announced the departure of Wahbi Khazri, who has joined Rennes on loan.
The 26-year-old joined the Black Cats last year from Bordeaux, but he started just seven Premier League matches and came off the bench in a further 14.
The midfielder mustered just one goal as the club fell to relegation from the top flight, and it has become clear that he is not deemed vital at the Stadium of Light as he has played just 70 minutes of football across three substitute appearances in the Championship this season.
A matter of hours before the 11pm transfer deadline, Sunderland confirmed that Khazri will spend the rest of the campaign on a temporary deal at Rennes.
The Ligue 1 club have picked up just two points from their first four games of the season.
