Hellas Verona have continued their strong start in Serie A by edging Sassuolo in a battle between the newly-promoted sides.
The hosts were without talisman Luca Toni but were bright from the first minute, taking the lead after 12 minutes when Martinho smashed home from a tight angle after collecting a through-ball from Emil Hallfredsson.
Sassuolo responded quickly to that setback as Simone Zaza went close on two occasions, before Juan Gomez Taleb's curling drive was tipped round the post.
Marcello Gazzola then missed from point-blank range for the visitors, hitting the air with the goal at his mercy after racing onto a rebound.
That missed proved costly as Verona put the result beyond doubt just before stoppage time, with Jorginho beating two players before rolling across goal for Romulo to tap home unmarked.
