Wolfsburg have missed the chance to climb up to third in the Bundesliga after playing out a 1-1 draw with Hannover.
The Hannover defence were given an early warning by Bas Dost when the Dutch striker peeled away from his markers in the box to head wide from a Christian Trasch cross.
Wolfsburg dominated possession for long spells as they looked to recover from the embarrassing 5-1 defeat to Bayern Munich in midweek, but Hannover looked a threat on the break, with Artur Sobiech getting through on goal before hesitating to allow Naldo to block his shot.
Chances would be difficult to come by until the hosts broke the deadlock five minutes before the break when Daniel Caligiuri delivered an inviting cross for the unmarked Dost, who punished the Hannover defence by heading home.
The response from Hannover was impressive and they pushed Wolfsburg back after the interval before drawing level as the hour mark approached.
It took a stunning finish from Hiroshi Kiyotake, who found the space to bring down a cross on his chest before sending a volley past the helpless Diego Benaglio.
Wolfsburg replied by piling the pressure on the Hannover defence, and they were twice denied by the impressive Ron-Robert Zieler as the Hannover goalkeeper made fine saves to keep out efforts from Caligiuri and Maximilian Arnold.
Dieter Hecking's side threatened to clinch the win in stoppage time, but Arnold dragged a shot wide of the post as Hannover held on to collect just their second point of the season.
