David Ferrer admits that he needed to adopt a different playing style to beat Albert Ramos-Vinolas in the second round of the Madrid Open.

David Ferrer has admitted that a change of style was behind his second-round win over Albert Ramos-Vinolas at the Madrid Open.

The seventh seed reached the last 16 of the tournament on Wednesday thanks to a 6-4 6-0 triumph over his fellow Spaniard.

Ferrer believes that a more stubborn approach in the second set allowed him to book his place in the third round.

"He's a really good player, especially on clay courts," he told the ATP's official website. "I knew there were going to be some long rallies. He started playing really well. Then I started playing a little bit shorter and he didn't know how to take his advantage. In the second set he had a little bit of physical problems and that's all."

Ferrer will meet another Spaniard in Fernando Verdasco in the third round.
