Arsenal Women's run in the Champions League came to an end with a 2-0 quarter-final second-leg defeat to Wolfsburg at the Volkswagen Arena.

After rescuing a last-gasp 1-1 draw in the first leg at the Emirates, Jonas Eidevall's side succumbed to Jill Roord's effort and Leah Williamson's own goal to bow out in the last eight 3-1 on aggregate.

Following a delayed kickoff due to copious amounts of confetti on the pitch, ex-Gunner Roord took all of nine minutes to draw first blood from close range after Arsenal failed to deal with a corner.

Roord did not hesitate to celebrate against her old club, and the Wolfsburg pressure was relentless from thereon in, as Tabea Wassmuth saw her effort disallowed for offside following a lengthy VAR review.

Eidevall's side struggled for attacking inspiration with the suspended Beth Mead unavailable, and Steph Catley's long-range effort - which did not trouble Almuth Schult - was their only real half-chance in the opening exchanges.

Wolfsburg comfortably dealt with their opponents in the second period and went 2-0 up in the 73rd minute, as Williamson poked into her own net following Sveindis Jane Jonsdottir's ball across.

Arsenal so nearly reduced the deficit moments after conceding their second, but Vivianne Miedema's header came crashing back off the crossbar before Schult did magnificently to keep out Williamson's goal-bound follow-up.

The Gunners were denied a penalty late on as Nikita Parris went to ground under Schult's challenge, as Wolfsburg set up a semi-final showdown with Barcelona with minimal difficulty. body check tags ::
