Hartlepool United lead East Thurrock United at half time in the FA Cup first round thanks to Jonathan Franks's goal.
Franks ran at a retreating East Thurrock defence after 32 minutes before hitting a powerful low shot into the bottom left-hand corner.
Prior to that the non-league team were playing well and causing Hartlepool problems, shown by Mitchell Gilbey cannoning an effort off the post from 25 yards.
Franks almost dashed up the other end and scored but his high shot from the middle of the box was clawed away by the goalkeeper.
After taking the lead, Hartlepool had chances to add another but both Marlon Harewood and Sidney Schmeltz were denied by the keeper.
