Sean Morrison opened the scoring for the Bluebirds, slotting home at the back post following Peter Whittingham's corner.
Just three minutes later, Kalvin Phillips scored his first goal for Leeds on his home debut, tapping in after Charlie Taylor's cross.
Cardiff were forced into a change before half time, with Eoin Doyle replacing Conor McAleny after the striker went off injured.
