Wigan Athletic surprised Manchester City in the FA Cup for the second time in two seasons on Sunday as they earned a 2-1 victory in the quarter-finals at the Etihad Stadium.

Jordi Gomez's first-half penalty gave the Latics the lead before James Perch doubled their advantage at the start of the second half.

Samir Nasri pulled a goal back for City with 20 minutes left on the clock, but they were unable to add to their tally.

Was the result fair?

It is hard to look beyond Wigan as the deserved winners because they performed more consistently over the 90 minutes. While the visitors were organised and hard-working throughout, City looked well below par on what was a woeful afternoon for Manuel Pellegrini's side.

Man City's performance

This was one of the worst displays of the season from the Blues as they struggled to have any sort of impact on the match. They were dominated in the first half by Wigan, who did all of the simple things correctly. In contrast, City failed to pass the ball with any intent and struggled to create anything up front. This sluggish performance continued after the break until they found the net with 20 minutes to go. Only then did they come to life, but even after that they spluttered in their search for an equaliser.

Wigan's performance

The holders can be proud of their performance at the Etihad Stadium after showing plenty of ambition, adventure and graft against their higher-ranked opponents. They built this win on a solid defensive unit led by Emmerson Boyce, while the midfield demonstrated the kind of attacking flair that was abundant during Roberto Martinez's reign at the club. That allowed Marc-Antonie Fortune and Jordi Gomez to cause the City backline numerous problems with their pace and movement. Overall, not a single player in a Wigan shirt could be accused of shying away during arguably the club's biggest game of the season so far. It would be a surprise if they retained their trophy, but they have proven yet again that they are capable of beating anyone on their day.

Emmerson Boyce: The Wigan defender was a rock at the back, going about his business with minimum fuss while City's striker huffed and puffed. He also made a crucial intervention in the second half by tackling Edin Dzeko when it looked like the striker was going to tap in from close range.

Biggest gaffe

Martin Demichelis had a nightmare for Wigan's second goal as Callum McManaman drifted past the defender as if he wasn't there before crossing for James Perch to tap in. The Argentine has been off the pace a few times already this season, and he won't have done his first-team chances any favours with this lacklustre offering.

Referee performance

Anthony Taylor needed to be firm as the match occasionally spilled over, mainly due to the frustrations of the City players. However, the official kept his head and allowed the game to be played at a good pace.

What next?

Man City: The Blues return to Champions League action on Wednesday when they try to overturn a 2-0 first-leg deficit against Barcelona at the Camp Nou in the last 16 of the tournament.

Wigan: The Latics continue their Championship campaign on Wednesday as Sheffield Wednesday make the trip to the DW Stadium.
