Second-half substitute Andy Williams scored a late goal as Swindon Town beat Preston North End in League One at the County Ground this evening.
Williams, who replaced Jonathan Obika, powered a header past Jamie Jones after a deflected cross from Ben Gladwin fell perfectly for him in the penalty box, to give the home side their eighth win of the season.
Both teams created plenty of chances in an entertaining game between two sides who sit towards the top of the League One table.
Preston had started the match on top and went close through a Joe Garner header, while Paul Gallagher whistled a free kick inches past the post.
Swindon goalkeeper Wes Foderingham made several key saves from Garner and Gallagher as the visitors created plenty of early first-half opportunities.
Swindon came back into it and Louis Thompson missed a great chance when he scuffed his shot while through on goal, while Obika tested the goalkeeper on a couple of occasions.
After the break, Swindon were the dominant team and both Yaser Kasim and Michael Smith forced Jones into a couple of decent saves from long range before Williams scored in the 84th minute.
Williams almost added a late second after Preston piled men forward, but he blazed the ball over the bar after breaking away into the penalty box.
The win lifts Swindon into third place in the League One table, just behind Preston in second.
