Sports Mole analyses Swansea's narrow 1-0 win over a wasteful Burnley at the Liberty Stadium.

Nathan Dyer struck the only goal of the game as Swansea City beat a spirited, yet wasteful, Burnley 1-0 at the Liberty Stadium this evening.

The winger was one of the bright sparks in a lively first-half showing from the hosts, and opened the scoring on 23 minutes following a clever ball from Gylfi Sigurdsson.

However, Garry Monk's side failed to build on their advantage in a second-half in which Burnley missed a series of gilt-edged opportunities en route to their second successive loss.

Here, Sports Mole has a closer look at the events in South Wales.

Was the result fair?

In a word, no. Sean Dyche will make the long trip back to Burnley this evening baffled as to how his side came away from the Liberty Stadium without a point at the very least. The Clarets huffed and puffed, but ultimately spurned chance after chance when opportunities presented themselves. For Dyche it is a harsh lesson, but he will have learned just how clinical his troops will need to be if they are to amass the points necessary to stay in this division.

Swansea City performance

It was very much a Jekyl & Hyde performance from the Swans this afternoon, having really clung to their victory after producing a slick first-half display. Was it pretty in the end? No. Will Garry Monk or Swansea care? No. They have emerged unscathed from two very real, yet very different tests following their win at Manchester United last week, and their brush with relegation last season will have taught them that performance does not supercede the result.

Burnley performance

It will be a long five-hour journey back to Burnley for the Clarets, who will be bitterly disappointed not to have claimed their first points of the Premier League season this afternoon. Dyche's men shook off what was a mixed first-half display and really took the game to their Welsh counterparts in the second 45 minutes and missed three excellent opportunities to get back on level terms. Welcome to the Premier League.

Sports Mole's man of the match

Lukasz Fabianski: The Poland goalkeeper looked a far cry from the man once nicknamed 'Flappyhandski' for his troubles between the sticks, and produced a commanding performance to help Swansea cling on to the three points. His most notable contribution came on 67 minutes when he tipped a David Jones effort wide from close range. Superb performance, with an honourable mention to Ashley Williams.

Biggest gaffe

Unlike his namesake in the Swansea goal, Lukas Jutkiewicz did not cover himself in glory this afternoon and missed the chance of the game just after the hour mark. Dean Marney's excellent lofted ball found the striker inside the area, but Jutkiewicz glanced a free header over the bar.

Referee performance

Craig Pawson is a relative newcomer to the Premier League, having made his debut back in 2013, but the 35-year-old official did not put a foot wrong today and neither manager can have any complaints about his performance this afternoon.

What next?

Swansea City: Monk and company host Rotherham United on Tuesday for a second-round Capital One Cup encounter.

Burnley: The Clarets will also turn their attentions toward League Cup duties on Tuesday when they face Sheffield Wednesday at Turf Moor.
