Sports Mole previews Sunday's Serie A clash between Frosinone and Genoa, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.
Sports Mole

Newly-promoted clubs Frosinone and Genoa meet in Serie A at the Stadio Benito Stirpe on Sunday.

This will be a repeat of the fixture played on the penultimate weekend of the Serie B campaign last season, which Frosinone won 3-2 to clinch the title at the expense of Genoa.

Match preview

The two sides have made respectable returns to the top flight, as both are a comfortable margin clear of the drop zone with roughly one-third of the season played.

Frosinone in particular are enjoying a fine start despite being one of the relegation favourites pre-season, with formidable home form to thank.

The hosts have only lost here once in 11 matches, dating back to mid-March, with that sole defeat coming against champions Napoli on the opening day.

That sees Frosinone currently in 12th in the Serie A table, six points clear of the bottom three.

Since losing to the Partenopei, Frosinone have taken an impressive 13 points from five matches at the Benito Stirpe, beating Atalanta BC, Sassuolo, Hellas Verona and Empoli.

Those 13 points account for 87% of their Serie A points so far, as only Juventus and Inter Milan have taken more points at home this season.

A defeat at San Siro to the Nerazzurri is how Frosinone signed off for the international break, but after playing six of their last nine games away from home, manager Eusebio Di Francesco will be happy to be back on home soil here.

Fellow promoted side Genoa have also used home matches to their advantage on their return to Serie A.

Alberto Gilardino's side have already recorded wins over Roma, Salernitana and Verona at Marassi so far this season, as well as holding Napoli to a draw in a game they really should have won.

The Rossoblu enter the weekend just a point below their upcoming opponents and lie 14th, with no immediate concerns of relegation.

If their away form does not improve then they may come unstuck eventually though, as they have taken just one point from their last five matches on the road.

The highly sought-after Radu Dragusin has been a key figure at the back, as Genoa have not conceded more than two goals in a game since the opening day, and the Romanian scored the only goal as Genoa beat Verona last time out.

Team News

Incoming youngsters have played a crucial part in Frosinone's success this season, with their front four in particular standing out.

Matias Soule has been the most impressive, but Marvin Cuni, Reinier and Arijon Ibrahimovic have all also shone in attack, with Enzo Barrenechea also proving a fine acquisition from Juventus.

Young 2001-born trio Stefano Turati in goal, and Caleb Okoli and Ilario Monterisi in front of him have formed a fine partnership at the back for Di Francesco's side too, and should all feature here.

The hosts will be without Abdou Harroui with a foot injury, and Albanian Sergio Kalaj, who is recovering from ligament damage, while Luca Mazzitelli was forced off injured in the defeat at Inter.

Mattia Bani was subbed off before half time in Genoa's win over Verona before the international break, so Koni De Winter, who represented Belgium Under-21s last week, could come in at the back.

Striker Mateo Retegui has still not recovered from a knee issue that saw him substituted at the break during their win over Salernitana in late October, as he missed the Italy squad which booked their place at Euro 2024 on Monday.

Albert Gudmundsson has filled the void in the goalscoring department left by Retegui, though, as the Icelandic forward has scored six goals in his last eight appearances.

Elsewhere, Gilardino is set to be without both Junior Messias and Filip Jagiello for this trip south.

Frosinone possible starting lineup:
Turati; Lirola, Monterisi, Okoli, Marchizza; Brescianini, Barrenechea; Reinier, Soule, Ibrahimovic; Cuni

Genoa possible starting lineup:
Martinez; De Winter, Dragusin, Vasquez; Sabelli, Frenderup, Badelj, Strootman, Haps; Ekuban, Gudmundsson

We say: Frosinone 1-1 Genoa

Many of Genoa's recent fixtures have been cagey affairs, and with not much to separate the sides, another could be in store.

Frosinone have been excellent at home this season and will be confident of keeping their unbeaten run going here, even if they are unable to find all three points.
