Sports Mole previews Sunday's EFL Trophy clash between Peterborough United and Wycombe Wanderers, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.
Sports Mole

Peterborough United will go head-to-head with fellow League One side Wycombe Wanderers in Sunday's EFL Trophy final at Wembley.

Posh are looking to become two-time winners of the competitions, while the Chairboys are hoping to get their hands on the trophy for the first time in their history.

Match preview

Peterborough are set to make their first appearance in the EFL Trophy final since beating Chesterfield 2-1 to clinch the silverware in 2013-14.

Darren Ferguson, who was in charge ten years ago, now has the opportunity to lead the club to their second EFL Trophy after overseeing knockout round wins over Arsenal Under-21s, Crawley Town, AFC Wimbledon and Blackpool.

The Peterborough boss is also hoping to guide his team to the Championship, with Posh currently sitting in fourth position in the League One table.

They bounced back from consecutive defeats to record a narrow 2-1 win in Monday's away game against Leyton Orient thanks to goals from Hector Kyprianou and Ephron Mason-Clark.

Posh may have won seven of their last nine competitive matches, but they have struggled in recent meetings with Wycombe, having failed to win any of their previous five head-to-head matches since running out 4-0 winners in January 2020.

While Peterborough are likely to be involved in the playoffs, Wycombe's league campaign is set to peter out to a comfortable mid-table finish.

The Chairboys played out a goalless draw in Monday's away clash with Blackpool to leave them in 13th position with 51 points to their name after 40 matches.

Although there may be little to play for in the league, Wycombe still have the chance to make the 2023-24 campaign a memorable one after reaching their first EFL Trophy final.

After progressing from the group stage, Matt Bloomfield's side saw off the Under-21 teams of Fulham, West Ham United and Brighton & Hove Albion, before they beat Bradford City 1-0 in the semi-final following Matt Butcher's 91st-minute winner.

Wycombe are now preparing to face a League One side for the first time in the competition, and they will be hoping that the encounter will be as successful as February's meeting with Peterborough at Adams Park, where they produced a free-scoring display to claim a 5-2 victory.

Team News

Peterborough are still unable to call upon goalkeeper Will Blackmore and midfielder Jeando Fuchs due to their respective injury issues.

Joel Randall could be recalled to the starting lineup after he dropped down to the bench for the win over Leyton Orient.

Mason-Clark will provide Peterborough with one of their main attacking threats, having scored 19 goals across all competitions this season.

As for the Chairboys, they remain without the services of Kane Vincent-Young, Saxon Earley and Brandon Hanlan.

Garath McCleary is a doubt after missing the last four matches, while Josh Scowen is hoping to be available despite being forced off in the first half of the goalless draw with Blackpool.

Gideon Kodua and Bez Lubala are both ineligible for the final, having previously played in the competition for West Ham Under-21s and Burton Albion respectively.

Peterborough United possible starting lineup:
Steer; Katongo, Knight, Edwards, Burrows; Kyprianou, Collins; Poku, Randall, Mason-Clark; Jones

Wycombe Wanderers possible starting lineup:
Ravizzoli; Grimmer, Low, Tafazolli, Leahy; Scowen, Potts, Butcher; Wheeler, Sadlier, Taylor

We say: Peterborough United 2-1 Wycombe Wanderers

While Peterborough are struggled in recent meetings with Wycombe, they have won seven of their last nine matches, and we think that they will have the extra quality required to claim a narrow victory in Sunday's final at Wembley.
