Sports Mole previews Monday's La Liga clash between Cadiz and Elche, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.
Sports Mole

Cadiz will be bidding to make it successive victories in La Liga when they continue their campaign at home to Elche on Monday night.

The Yellow Submarine will enter the match off the back of a 1-0 win over Valencia, while Elche suffered a 1-0 loss to Celta Vigo in their last match, with the visitors currently rock bottom of the table, picking up just four points from their opening 16 matches.

Match preview

Cadiz have struggled for consistency during the 2022-23 campaign, but the home side recorded a huge win over Valencia last time out, with Ruben Alcaraz scoring the only goal of the match in the ninth minute.

The result moved Sergio Gonzalez's side onto 15 points from their 16 matches, boasting a record of three wins, six draws and seven defeats, which has left them level with 17th-placed Sevilla in terms of points.

Cadiz are only actually two points behind 13th-placed Getafe, which is an indication of how quickly things could change in the bottom half of the table, and they will be looking to build on their win over Valencia here.

The Yellow Submarine have the fourth-worst home record in La Liga this term, picking up just seven points from eight matches, but they will be facing an Elche side that have collected just two points from their eight games on their travels during the 2022-23 campaign.

Cadiz are in their third straight season at this level of football, which is their best run in La Liga since the early 1990s, and they will be bidding to make it back-to-back wins over Elche on Monday, having recorded a 3-0 victory when the two sides last locked horns in May.

Elche, meanwhile, are also in their third straight season in La Liga, finishing 17th and 13th in Spain's top flight since earning promotion from the Segunda Division in 2019-20.

Los Franjiverdes face a serious fight to retain their spot at this level of football, though, as they are rock bottom of the table, picking up only four points from their opening 16 matches.

Elche are yet to triumph in the league this season, drawing four and losing 12 of their 16 games, while they have only found the back of the net on 10 occasions and conceded 34.

Pablo Machin's side will enter this match off the back of three straight defeats in all competitions, while they have lost their last five in the league to Getafe, Real Valladolid, Girona, Atletico Madrid and Celta Vigo.

Iago Aspas hit the winner for Celta on January 6, and Elche will now be looking to bounce back, as they prepare to finish the month with games against Osasuna and Sevilla.

Los Ilicitanos have won two of their last three league games against Cadiz, meanwhile, with their last success (3-1) coming in their home fixture last season.

Team News

Cadiz will be missing Jose Mari due to a long-term knee injury, while David Gil, Juan Cala, Victor Chust, Jon Ander Garrido and Joseba Zaldua are all doubts.

Head coach Sergio will have been delighted with his team's performance against Valencia last time out, so it would not be a surprise to see the same starting XI for this match.

Anthony Lozano is likely to continue at the tip of the attack despite the presence of Alvaro Negredo, while Ruben Sobrino and Brian Ocampo are expected to feature in the wide positions.

As for Elche, Alex Collado, Josan, John Donald and Jony Alamo will again be on the sidelines through injury.

Meanwhile, Pedro Bigas is suspended following his red card in the defeat to Celta last time out.

Head coach Machin is expected to keep faith with a 3-4-3 formation, with Lautaro Blanco potentially coming into the defence as the replacement for Bigas.

Pere Milla is the team's leading goalscorer in the league this season with three, and the 30-year-old will again feature in an attacking position for the league's basement side.

Cadiz possible starting lineup:
Ledesma; Carcelen, Hernandez, Fali, Espino; Fede, Alcaraz; Sobrino, Alex, Ocampo; Lozano

Elche possible starting lineup:
Badia; Palacios, Gonzalez, Blanco; Morente, Mascarell, Gumbau, Clerc; Roger, Boye, Milla

We say: Cadiz 1-0 Elche

Elche will end their winless run at some point, but we are finding it difficult to back them in this match. Cadiz were impressive against Valencia last time out, and we are expecting the Yellow Submarine to put another three points on the board, which could move them out of the relegation zone.
